Portsmouth are the heavy odds on favourites to be the first Premier League club to go to the wall, reports online bookmaker PaddyPower. Following former Birmingham owner David Sullivan’s comments that it is “probably odds on” that one Premier League club will collapse this year the bookmaker has installed the South coast club at just 1/5 to be the first club to go. Having not paid their players on several occasions this season Portsmouth have endured a torrid time on and off the field following two messy takeovers so far this season.
With good news of a buyer on the horizon West Ham are 10/1, a price that would have been a lot shorter in previous weeks whilst Manchester United, despite the headlines of having to sell their best players to finance their debts, are 16/1. Outsiders in the betting include Manchester City, Arsenal and Spurs all at 500/1.
Darren Haines, spokesman for paddypower.com, said: “It won’t be a surprise to Pompey fans to see they are currently the favourites but if Sullivan is to be believed who’s to say some other club might hit the buffers first?”
