Fabio Capello’s squad for England’s friendly against Brazil this week has shaken up PaddyPower’s World Cup Ladder betting on who will make the final squad to next summer’s tournament. With just two games to go for the national team before Capello names his squad it appears the hopefuls on the fringe of the squad are running out of time to impress the Italian but with Gerrard, Beckham, Ferdinand, Ashley Cole and Lennon just some of the big names out of the clash with Brazil this week it could be good news for the likes of Stephen Warnock and Tom Huddlestone called into the squad.
Darren Haines, spokesman for PaddyPower, said: “Most people can name eight of nine of Fabio’s starting eleven in South Africa but it could be all to play for amongst the fringe players. There’s nearly always one name that makes a late run into the squad but can punters pinpoint who that might be?”
Up front Emile Heskey’s inability to hit a barn door for Villa has seemingly improved the chances for the other hopeful strikers with Darren Bent, in the squad to face Brazil this week, having been cut by the bookmaker from 5/1 to 11/8 to go to South Africa. Carlton Cole is now odds on at 4/5 to make the trip from 5/4 and Heskey’s Villa team mate Gabby Agbonlahor has been cut from 7/2 to 6/5. However the door looks all but shut for Michael Owen who continues to drift and is now 11/4 from 6/4 to find late favour from Capello.
Amongst the midfielders James Milner’s versatility looks to have made him an increasing certainty with his odds coming in from 5/4 to 8/11 whilst Owen Hargreaves, close to ending his long injury lay off, has been tempting punters enough to have his odds cut from 4/1 to 15/8. Newcomer to the squad Tom Huddlestone is 10/1 to make a late-run all the way to South Africa.
Finally in defence, Stephen Warnock’s call up has cut his odds to make Fabio’s 23 from 4/1 to 2/1 with Gary Cahill also entering the betting at 11/2. But Gary Neville’s 85 cap England career could be all but over as the Man Utd right-back drifts from 5/1 to 7/1. |
